What I’m Reading

Since I’m watching less TV, I’m reading more (and more and more). Here’s a quick rundown of what’s on my nightstand/in my nook:

Reading

  • Mind Over Medicine by Dr. Lissa Rankin
Dr. Rankin dives into the studies that connect what is going on in our minds with physical manifestations in our bodies. It is part research review and part self-help. I’ve just got a few pages left and plan to post my review soon.
  • Naked Economics by Charles Wheelan
I majored in math and economics in college. As much as I love philosophy and personal development, I have an ingrained geeky side which (much to my surprise) I’ve been missing lately. I’m dipping my toe back into the economic waters with this book. It is a fascinating read. Easy to follow, well written and enjoyable. I have a renewed understanding and appreciation of our government, financial systems and markets. I’m about 1/3 of the way through.
  • How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker
I’m just on the first chapter. It is a dense and long read (more than 600 pages). I’ve been curious about how this nebulous “mind” works to create our story and propel us through life. I’ve picked up and put this book down a few times over the last year. Something about it is calling to me and I’m determined to eventually get all the way through.
  • Instant Mom by Nia Vardalos
I finished this book over last weekend when Phillip was out of town. It is just wonderful. It chronicles Nia’s journey to become a mom through the US foster care system. She discusses infertility and the eventual adoption of her 3 year old daughter. In true Nia style, it is funny, heartwarming and riveting. It was of personal interested because this is the same way that Phillip and I plan to build our family once we get through my health stuff. Click on the link above to read an excerpt of this book. Warning: it will make you cry.

I’ve got a Goodreads account started and have updated it with the many other books that line my bookshelves. I’d love to connect with you there so we can share in the literary goodness.
